Family History

Arthur Herbert Gadsby was born in 1885 in Basford the son of John a coal miner and Louisa Gadsby née Chambers.John was born in 1861 at Leicester Louisa Chambers was born in 1865 at Cinderhill, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 5 children. His father was a coal miner and in 1891 Arthur, his sister Effie and his parents were living at No 8 Broomfield Place, Basford. By 1901 the family had moved to 126 Park Lane in Basford. Arthur had joined his father at the colliery and he now had another sister and brother. his mother Louisa died in 1912 aged 47 yrs. Arthur married Ada Emily Mason (born 17th July 1887 ) on 15th April 1912 at St John's Church, Colwick, they lived at 60, Manvers St., Netherfield, Nottingham and later 2 Albert Street, Gedling , they had a son Harold born 10th October 1912. Commencing 5th July 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Private Arthur Gadsby enlisted on 14th April 1904 at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion East Lancashire Regiment. He entered the theatre of war 22 August 1914 and two months later he was killed in action. Buried in the Strand (Ploegsteert Extension) Military Cemetery Belgium. He was eligible for the 1914 star with clasp, the British and Victory medals
