Family History

Sidney Oliver Pepper was born in 1899 at East Leake and was the son of the late George a general labourer at the lime works and Elizabeth Pepper of the Green, East Leake. His father George Pepper was born in 1845 at Normanton on Soar and died in 1909 aged 61 yrs, his mother Elizabeth was born in 1870 Wymswold, they were married prior to 1885 and went on to have the following children, George b1885 Normanton on Soar, Lily 1895 East Leake, John b1892 East Leake, Maud b1897 East Leake, Sidney b1899 East Leake, Sevina b1904 East Leake and Christopher b1907 East Leake. His mother went on to marry George Swain (born 1865 Long Clawson) a general labourer in 1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Green East Leake and are shown as George Swain 46 yrs a general labourer he is living with his wife Elizabeth Swain 41yrs and his step children, John Pepper 19 yrs a general labourer, Maud Pepper 14 yrs a domestic housemaid, Sidney 12 yrs a scholar, Sevina 7 yrs a scholar and Christopher 4 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Sidney Pepper enlisted at Loughborough whilst residing at East Leake, he served with the 2/5th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 30th September 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 50 to 51
