William was born in 1895 in Kneeton and was the son of John a farm labourer and Emma Cooper. John and Emma had 6 children in total but sadly 2 died before the 1911 census. William's siblings were Ernest, Bertha and Lucy. In the 1911 census the family are living in East Bridgford , William is 14 years of age and is a butchers errand lad.

Military History

William while residing in East Bridgford enlisted in Nottingham and served with he 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918. His body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
