John Ralph Walker was born in 1897 at Costock and was the son of Albert a butcher and Mary Ann Walker née James, of The Hollies, East Thorpe St., Ruddington. His father Albert Walker was born in 1865 at Mapperley, Nottingham and his mother MaryAnn James was born in 1866 at Costock, they were married on 2nd November 1885 at St Pauls Church Hyson Green, they had the following children, William James b1882 Costock, Sarah b1886 Rempstone,, Albert Fred b1887 Rempstone, Annie Evelyn b1889 Costock , Alice Dorothy b1892 Costock Hilda b1894 Costock, John Ralph b1897 Costock, Phylis Kathleen b1900 Costock , Nora Mavis b1902 Costock and Margaret Joyce b1906 Costock. In the 1911 census the family are residing at The Square , Costock and are shown as Albert 46 yrs a butcher, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 45 yrs and their children, Albert Fred 23 yrs a butcher, John Ralph 13 yrs a scholar, Phyllis Kathleen 11 yrs a scholar, and Nora Mavis 11 yrs as scholar, also living with them as a boarder is William Shepherd 15 yrs a butcher.

Military History

Private John Ralph Walker served with the 7th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he died on 21st February 1919 at Military Hospital in London as a result of gas poisoning which he had received in action. He is buried at Costock (St Giles) Churchyard, Near South-West Corner
