Family History

George was born 1880 at Normanton in Leicestershire, the son of Henry and Emma Hammond. Henry was a blacksmith and by 1885 he had brought his wife and children to Nottingham where in 1891 they were living at No 63 Raglan Street. The family were still there in 1901 with six children. George was an apprentice joiner. In 1910 George married Sarah Hannah Kemp and in 1911 they were living at 12 Eaton Terrace, Eaton Street, Mapperley, although by 1914 they had moved to Burton Joyce and by the time of George's death Sarah was living at "Willow Wong" in Burton Joyce. Following George's death his widow was awarded a weekly pension of 12 shillings and sixpence a week from 29th January 1917.

Military History

Enlisting at Nottingham on 2nd September 1914 George served with C Company, 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He had previously been with the 1st Notts Volunteers for a year in 1908. George went to France on 14 July 1915. He died of his wounds and was buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-l'Abbe, in the Somme region of France. He was eligible for the 1915 star, Victory and British medals
