William Henry Birkett (also known as Henry ) was born in 1884 at Carlton Le Moorland (a village just outside Newark) Lincolnshire and was the son of Henry a farm labourer and Millicent Sophia Birkett née Robinson of Carlton Le Moorland, Newark. His father Henry was born in 1841 at Swinderby, Lincolnshire and his mother Millicent Sophia Robinson was born at Bassingham, Lincolnshire, they were married on 5th June 1877 at Bassingham and went on to have 8 children, sadly 2 were to died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born at Carlton Le Moorland were, Sarah b1880, William Henry b1884, John b1886, Jane b1888, Mary Ann b1891 and George b1894. By the 1901 census William Henry has left home , he is shown as being 17 yrs of age single and a servant, he is living at Kneeton with William Bee Pattinson 41 yrs a foreman on a farm and his family. In the 1911 census he is shown as being 27 yrs and a labourer on a farm , he is living at Harmston, Lincolnshire with John Catsledine 63 yrs a farmer and his family. In the same 1911 census we find his parents are still living at Carlton Le Moorland and are shown as Henry 69 yrs a farm labourer , he is living with his wife Millicent Sapphire 61 yrs and their son George 17 yrs a farm labourer.
Private William Henry Birkett enlisted at Lincoln , he served with the 1/9th battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 25th September 1917 and is buried in Heninel Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France, grave reference E.15
His younger brother George also served and died in the Great War, he served with the service number 201286 in the 1st battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, he enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Ossington, he was killed in action on 27th September 1918 and is buried at Hermies Hill, British Cemetery, France grave reference II.D.17 Both brothers are commemorated on the Lychgate War memorial at the parish church at Carlton Le Willows.
