George Clarke was born in 1892 at Blidworth and was the son of John a mine platelayer and Mary Clarke née Hopkinson of Lower Blidworth. His father John was born in 1854 at Blidworth and his mother Mary Hopkinson was born in 1859 also at Blidworth, they were married in 1878, their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Arthur b1880, George b1892 and William b1895 all were born at Blidworth. In the 1911 census the family are living at Blidworth Bottoms Road, Mansfield and are shown as John 57 yrs a mine platelayer underground, he is living with his wife Mary 52 yrs and their children, George 19 yrs a coal miner pony driver, William 16 yrs a miner pony driver, also living at the address is Arthur Clarke 53 yrs a woodman planter on an estate, he is described as brother of John.
Gunner George Clarke, enlisted at Mansfield and served with “D” Battery, 93rd Brigade Royal Field Artillery, he died of wounds on 8th June 1916. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen Belgium.
His brother William Clarke enlisted on 27th January 1915 at Mansfield he gave his age as 19 yrs and 305 days, he was a coal miner, his father John Clarke of Blidworth bottoms was his next of kin. He served with the Royal Field Artillery and went to France on 18th May 1915 until 20th November 1915 when he was transferred to Mesopotamia serving their from 21st November 1915 until 15th June 1916 when he was again transferred to India where he served from 16th June 1916 until 29th November 1916. He returned to Mesopotamia on 30th November 1916 until 29th December 1917 and then went to Egypt where he served from 22nd January 1918 until 2nd April 1918. He was then sent back to France where he served from 12th April 1918 until 31st August 1918. He was eventually demobilised from the Army on 29th January 1919 to an address at Lower Blidworth.
