Family History

William Henry Clarke was born in 1887 at Hucknall and was the son of Henry a farmer and his first wife the late Alice Clarke née Varnham , of Mansfield Rd., Blidworth. His father Henry was born in 1861 at Worksop, his mother Alice Varnham was born in 1863 at Mansfield, she died in 1891 aged 28 yrs, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, William Henry b1887 Hucknall, George b1888 Blidworth and Arthur b1890 Newstead. His father re married in 1894 to Harriett Walters b1859 at Blidworth their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, In the 1911 census the family are living at Mansfield Road, Blidworth and are shown as Henry 50 yrs a farmer, he is living with his second wife Harriett 52 yrs and their son William 24 yrs a railway labourer.

Military History

Private William Henry Clarke enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was attached to the 359th Trench Mortar Battery. He died of wounds on 19th June 1918 and is buried in Fouquieres Churchyard Extension, Pas de Calais, France.
