Percy was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the son of Albert James a wicker basket maker and Emma Shipsides née Lowe. His father Albert James was born in 1854 in Cromford, Derbyshire and his mother Emma Lowe was born in 1852 in Nottingham, they were married in 1877 their marriage being recorded in the Basford Registration District. They went on to have 8 children , however sadly one died in infancy their surviving children were :- Eliza Ann b1878, James William b1881, Edward b1883, Joseph Sherburn b1885, Frederick b1888, Percy b1889 and Florence Ruth b1896 all the children were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 105 Egypt Road, New Basford, Nottingham, they are shown as Albert James 57yrs head of the family a wicker basket maker, he is living with his wife Emma 59 yrs and their children, Edward 28 yrs a coal miner, Joseph Sherbourne 26 yrs a dyers labourer in bleach works, Percy 22 yrs a coal miner and Florence Ruth 15 yrs an upholsterer. He married his wife Nellie Mear in 1915 in Nottingham they lived at 36, Howitt St., Hyson Green, Nottingham, they went on to have a daughter Irene born in 1916 in Nottingham.
Private Percy Shipsides enlisted in Retford, he was residing in Nottingham at this time, he served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps with service number R/7724. He later transferred to the 6th battalion Wiltshire Regiment . He landed in France on 8th April 1915 . He died of 'flu as a prisoner of war at Rheinberg on 17th July 1918, aged 29. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.Germany.
His older brother Edward Shipsides also served during the 'Great War' he served in the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment , he was killed in action on 10th March 1915. Death notices published 14th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SHIPSIDES. – On July 17th, 1918, in Germany, Pte. Percy Shipsides, Wiltshires (late K.R.R.), aged 29 years, the beloved husband of Nelly Shipsides, 36, Howitt-street, late of Basford. I hoped for a safe returning, once more to clasp your hand, but God has postponed the meeting, 'twill be in the better land. – Sorrowing wife and baby.” In memoriam published 17th July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- ] “SHIPSIDES. – In loving memory of Pte. Percy Shipsides, died in Germany July 17th, 1918, the beloved husband of Nellie Shipsides, 36 Howitt-street.
