William Henry Ward was born on 18th June 1896 at Carlton and was the son of the late William Thomas a scavenger and Rhoda Jane Ward née Daff of 1 Birch Avenue, Carlton. His father William Thomas was born in 1873 at Carlton, he died in 1910 aged 37 yrs, his mother Rhoda Jane Daff was born in 1873 at Lincoln, they were married on 25th January 1896 at the Emmanuel Church, Nottingham and went on to have 9 children all of whom were born in Carlton and were, William Henry b1896, George Cyril b1897, Elsie b1898, Gladys Lillian b1900, John Wilfred b1902, Doris Gertrude b1904 , Claude b1905, Lois Ann b1907 and Sidney Ward b1908. In the 1911 census the family lived at 14 Beck Street Carlton Nottingham and were shown as Rhoda Jane Ward 38 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, William Henry 14 yrs a hosiery stamper, George Cyril 13 yrs a furniture fitter, Elsie 12 yrs a scholar, Gladys Lillian 11 yrs a scholar, John Wilfred 9 yrs a scholar, Doris Gertrude 7 yrs a scholar, Claude 6 yrs, Lois Ann 4 yrs and Sidney 3 yrs of age.
Private William Henry Ward enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Carlton, he initially served with the service number R/12408 in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was Killed in action whilst serving with the 20th London Regiment on 30th August 1918 and is buried at Encoust-St-Mein Cemetery France, where he is commemorated on a special memorial A1
His brother Rifleman George Cyril Ward enlisted on 26th April 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his address as 14 Beck Street, Carlton, his age as 19 yrs and 8 months and his occupation as that of a cabinet maker, his next of kin was his mother Rhoda of the same address . He was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and arrived at their depot in Winchester on 30th April 1915. He landed in France on 14th December 1915 and was killed in action on 25th September 1918. He is buried at Berthancourt Communal Cemetery Grave Reference: B 10
