Samuel Tyler was born in 1899 in Newcastle Upon Tyne and was the son of Edwin and Ada Tyler née Lindley, his parents were married in 1898 at Newcastle on Tyne. In the 1901 census the family are shown living at 51 Shipley Street, Byker, Newcastle on Tyne, Edwin is shown as head of the family but his names is crossed out, under the heading occupation his is given as 'soldier'. Ada is shown as being head of the family 28 yrs and born in Derbyshire, she is living with her children, Albert 2 yrs and Samuel 1 yr. In the 1911 census Samuel 11 yrs is living at 23 Chesterfield Street, Carlton, Nottingham he is living with his aunt and uncle James Page 30 yrs a bridge painter and his wife Florence 33 yrs and their 2 children Frances 5 yrs and Elizabeth 3 yrs.
Private Samuel Tyler enlisted on 31st May 1915, he gave a false age of 19 yrs and 1 month, he gave his address as 41 Chesterfield Street, Carlton, Nottingham, giving his occupation as butcher, his next of kin was his father Edwin of the same address. He was posted to the Nottinghamshire Sherwood Rangers. 258 days later on 12th February 1916 having found out his true age he was discharged from the Army being under 17 yrs of age, under King's Regulations 392. He later joined up once more and served with service number 87689 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and later transferring to the 12/13th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on 12th April 1918 on the Western Front, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cott, Memorial.
