Fred Pierpoint was born in 1898 at Carlton and was the son of Thomas a plumber and Mary Pierpoint née Howarth of 24 Gladstone Street, Carlton, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1861 at Netherfield and his mother Mary Howarth was born in 1861 in Lancashire, they were married C1895 his mother brought a child to the marriage Tom Howarth b1890 Lancashire, they went on to have the following children, Fred b1898, Samuel b1900 and Gilbert b1901, all were born in Carlton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 24 Gladstone Street, Carlton and are shown as Thomas 50 yrs a plumber he was living with his wife Mary 50 yrs and their children, Tom Howarth (stepson) 21 yrs a timber carrier in a furniture warehouse, Fred 13 yrs a machine taker off in a furniture factory, Samuel 11 yrs a scholar and Gilbert 10 yrs a scholar.
Private Fred Pierpoint enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 18th battalion Machine Gun Corp and was killed in action on 11th July 1918. He is buried at Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. grave reference IV.H.23
His stepbrother Tom Howarth enlisted in Nottingham. Killed in action he was buried in Aveluy Wood Cemetery (Lancashire dump), Mesnil-Martinsart in the Somme region of France. He was eligible for the British and Victory medals. He is also commemorated on a family grave in Carlton cemetery along with his half brother Fred Pierpoint.
