John George Peake was born on 11th November 1880 at Carlton and was the son of Joseph George Peake and Emma Peake née Britten. John George married Kate Mabel Walkerdine in 1900, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, John Edwin b1902, Thomas Arthur b1906, Gladys May b1911 and Elsie b1913 all were born in Carlton they lived at 6, Lily Avenue, Forester St., Netherfield, Nottinghamshire In the 1911 census the family were living at 26 Worth Street, Carlton and were shown as John 30 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Kate 30 yrs and their children John 9 yrs a scholar, Thomas 5 yrs and May under 11 months of age. Commencing 24th April 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence.

Military History

Rifleman John George Peake enlisted at Nottingham in January 1915, he served with the 12th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 24th July 1915 and died of wounds on 15th October 1915 and is buried at Merville Communal Cemetery, France, grave reference IV.J.6
