William Osborne was born in 1898 at Carlton and was the son of Henry Ernest a railway goods guard and Harriett Osbornbe née Edmed of 24 Mount Pleasant, Carlton, Nottingham. His father Henry Ernest was born in 1862 at Fulham, his mother Harriett Edmed was born in 1862 at Primrose Hill, London, she died in 1902 in Nottingham she was 40 yrs of age, they were married on 14th November 1881 at St James Church, Bethnall Green, they went on to have 9 children, sadly one was to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were Ellen b1884 Kimberley, Kate b1886 Kimberley, George b1889 Colwick, Norah b1893 Carlton, Harriett b1895 Carlton, William b1898 and Sidney b1899 Carlton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 24 Mount Pleasant, Carlton and are shown as Henry Ernest 49 yrs a widow and a good guard, he is living with his sons William 13 yrs a scholar and Sidney 11 yrs a scholar.
Private William Osborne enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Carlton, he initially served with the service number 20681 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd July 1917 whilst serving with the 51st Company Machine Gun Corps and is buried at Bailleul Road East Cemetery, Kurent-Blangy, France.
The war diary for 51 MG Company on this date states: 'At 10.15 am Cork Trench heavily shelled, one gun team No 15 being killed; 3636 Sgt Ambrose, WE, 49947 Pte Hindle, H, 90036 Pte Borton, H; 71739 Pte Osborne, W, 57352 Mogg, SHE.'
