Edward Lane was born in 1885 at Hougham, Lincolnshire and was the son of William Billings Lane a coal dealer and Mary Ann Lane née Wilson of Station Road, Carlton. His father William Billings was born in 1856 at Kirkby La Thorpe, Lincolnshire, his mother Mary Ann Wilson was born in 1855 at Heckington, Lincolnshire, they were married on 27th January 1884 at Osbournby parish church, Lincolnshire, they went on to have the following children, John William Theodore b1874 Osbournby, Tom b1878 Kirkby La Thorpe, Arthur b1881 Honnington, Sarah Ann b1884 Barkstone Heath, Edward b1885 Hougham, Charles b1887 Houghton, Alice b1888 Houghton and Walter b1892 Houghton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Perlethorpe village near Ollerton and are shown as William 55 yrs a cowman on a farm, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 56 yrs and their son Edward 26 yrs an estate woodman.

Military History

Private Edward Lane enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Carlton, he initially served with the service number 245734 in the Royal Engineers, he was killed in action on 12th October 1917 whilst serving with the 7th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
