Born 1895. Son of James and Ellen Harrop, of Bestwood Park, Notts. James was a Police Constable and had 5 sons and two daughters. In 1901 the family were living at Bestwood Park then by 1911 they had moved to No 1 Beardall Street, Hucknall. William was working as an English Beef butcher. By 1914 the family had moved to Carlton as James Harrop had been promoted to Inspector and they were living at the Police Station.
He enlisted at Nottingham. Private Harrop went to France on 19 January 1915. He was eventually promoted to Sergeant. William died of his wounds and was buried at the Dozinghem Military cemetery, Belgium. He was eligible for the 1915 Star, British and Victory medals. There is a discrepancy with the death date as the Carlton memorial states 1 August whereas all the military documents state 31 July.
William's older brother Harry died in France of his wounds in 1916
