Born Joseph Walter in 1881 at Mapperley the son of Peter and Mary Crinage. His father was a domestic gardener. The family were living at 92 Quernby Rd, St Anns, Nottingham in 1891. In 1904 Walter married Helen Denton but sadly she died in 1908. By 1911 the family had moved to No 3 Asper Street in Netherfield. His sisters had left home but Walter (as he is named) was now living with his parents again. In all Peter and Mary Crinage had ten children all of whom were still alive in 1911. Peter and his three oldest sons were all working as gardening labourers.
Walter attested at Nottingham on 8 August 1898 to join the Militia, in the 4th Battalion the Notts & Derbys regiment as No 6449. He enlisted at Derby and served initially as Private 41264 in the Notts & Derbys regiment before transferring to the Cameronians as Private 41008. He was killed in action and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Belgium. He was eligible for the British and Victory medals
Two of his brothers also served in the Great War. Edgar Herbert who was killed in action July 1917 and Charles Richard who had embarked for France as part of the British Expeditionary Force 8 September 1914 and survived the war.
