Arthur Maddison was born in 1890 at Irthlinborough and was the son of Jacob a shoe maker and Ellen Maddison née Ingram of 5 Main Street Carlton Nottingham. His father Jacob was born in 1866 and his mother was born in 1867 both were born in Irthlingborough, they were married 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Wellingborough registration district, they went on to have 15 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Arthur b1890, Eva Lilly b1891, Ivy Elizabeth b1893, Jessie b1894, Annie b1895, Maud Ellen b1897, Gladys Vilet b1898 all were born in Irthlingborough, they had further children, Percy Edward b1901, Harry b1903, William b1903, all were born in Bolsover, their final children Elsie b1905 and Fred b1907 were born in Carlton. In the 1911 census the family were living at 5 Main Street, Carlton, Nottingham and were shown as Jacob 45 yrs a shoe maker, he is living with his wife Ellen 44 yrs and their children, Arthur 21 yrs a coal miner hewer, Eva Lilly 20 yrs a cotton winder, Ivy Elizabeth 18 yrs a lace machinist, Jessie 17 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Annie 16 yrs a french polisher, Maud Ellen 14 yrs a cotton winder, Gladys Violet 13 yrs a scholar, Percy Edward 10 yrs scholar, Harry 8 yrs, William 8 yrs, Elsie 6 yrs and Fred 4 yrs.
Pte. Arthur Maddison, 1/1st South Notts. Hussars, died of wounds on 17th October 1916. He is buried in Lahana Military Cemetery, Greece.
Following are obituaries from the 'Nottingham Evening Post,' dated 17th October 1917 “MADDISON. – In loving remembrance of Private Arthur Maddison, Hussars, of Carlton, who died of wounds received in action October 17th, 1916.
