Harry Leaper

Harry was the son of Samuel Jessie K. Leaper and Elizabeth (Lizzie) C. Leaper nee Miller. Samuel was born in Carlton, Nottingham, in 1872 (J/F/M Basford). He and Elizabeth were married in 1894 (A/M/J Basford) and had eight children of whom only five survived: Lizzie, Harry birth registered 1896 (J/F/M Basford), Lily b. 1898 (J/A/S Basford), Rose b. 18 June 1900 (J/A/S Basford) and Ada b. 3 July 1904 (J/A/S Basford). All the children were born in Carlton. In 1901 Samuel (29), a brickmaker, and Elizabeth (25), were living at 55 Foxhill Road, Carlton, with their four children, Lizzie (6), Harry (5), Lily (3) and Rose (9 months). At the time of the 1911 Census Samuel and Elizabeth were registered at different addresses. Samuel was at 10 Carlton Hill, Carlton. He was now working as a brickyard labourer. With him in the home on the night of the census were his four youngest children, Harry (15) a french polisher, Lily (13) who was described as 'at home', Rose (10) and Ada (6). His wife Elizabeth/Lizzie (34), an embroiderer hosiery and his eldest daughter Lizzie (16) a lace hand (dressing room) were at 53 Station Road, Carlton, in the home of his wife's widowed brother, John Miller, a chimney sweep, and his son Albert (13), also a chimney sweep. The CWGC record gives his parents' address as 3A Worth Street, Carlton, Nottingham. Samuel Leaper died in 1925 (Sep Basford) age 52. Of Harry's sisters: Lizzie has not yet been traced after 1911. Rose probably married Leonard W Swinscoe in 1921 (A/M/J Basford. In 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register she and Willie (b. 18 November 1898), a wood machinist, were living in Carlton. She died in 1995 (Jun Nottingham) aged 95. Lily probably married William AP Hallam in 1927 (A/M/J Basford) Ada probably married William Langsdale in 1926 (J/A/S Basford) and died in 1983 (Jun Nottingham) aged 78.
