John Thomas Whyler was born in 1895 at Carlton and was the son of John (senior) a frame work knitter and Elizabeth Whyler née Musson of 11 Cromwell Street, Carlton. His father John (senior) was born in 1860 at Bingham, his mother Elizabeth Musson was born in 1862 also at Carlton, she died in 1905 at Nottingham aged 43 yrs. They were married on 18th April 1881 at Gedling and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Carlton, Henry b1882, Emma b1884, Leonard b1888, Ellen b1890, Elizabeth b1893, John Thomas b1895 and Florence b1898. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Cromwell Street, Carlton and are shown as John 51 yrs a widow , he is living with his children, John 15 yrs a carriage builder and Florrie 13 yrs a chevenor
Private John Thomas Whyler enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action on 3rd September 1916, he is buried in Knightsbridge Cemetery Mesnil-Martinsart, Somme, France. grave reference F.25
