Samuel Ryalls was born in 1893 art Carlton and was the son of Thomas a blacksmiths striker and Elizabeth Ryalls née Iles, of 32, Gladstone Street, Carlton, Nottinghamshire. His father Thomas was born in 1864 at Carlton and his mother Elizabeth Iles was born in 1870 at Bradford, they were married on 2nd August 1890 at St Peters Cathedral, Bradford and went on to have the following children, Thomas Henry b1890, Elizabeth b1892, Samuel b1893, Oliver b1896, William b1897 and May b1909, all were born in Carlton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 32 Gladstone Street, Carlton, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas 47 yrs a blacksmiths striker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 41yrs and their children, Thomas Henry 21 yrs a picture frame maker, Elizabeth 19 yrs a lace mender, Samuel 17 yrs a lace maker, Oliver 15 yrs a bricklayers apprentice, William 13 yrs a scholar, and May 2 yrs of age.
Private Samuel Ryalls enlisted at Nottingham whist residing at Carlton, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 13th March 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His brother Oliver also served during the Great War, he enlisted on 5th October 1914 at Nottingham he gave his age as 19 yrs and 105 days and was a bricklayer of 32 Gladstone Street, Carlton. He served in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and he landed in France on 5th March 1915 and was wounded at Neuve Chappell in his eye and both legs and was blinded in his right eye. He was returned to England for treatment and was discharged from the Army o 22nd May 1915 as no longer physically fit to serve.
