Thomas Arthur was born in 1898 in Spondon and was the son of Thomas Henry a coal carter for the Co operative Society and Sarah Rowlston, they lived at 5 Garnett Street, Netherfield, Nottingham. His father Thomas Henry was born in Spondon in 1869 and his mother Sarah was born in 1865 in Stoke Bardolph, Nottingham, they were married C1890 and had three children all born in Spondon, Mary b1891, Gertrude b1894 and Thomas Arthur b1898. By the 1901 census the family had moved to Nottingham and were living at Stonepit Road, Carlton. By the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Garnett Street, Netherfield and are shown as Thomas H 42 yrs a coal carter for the Cooperative society, he is living with his wife Sarah 46 yrs and their three children Mary 20 yrs, Gertrude 17 yrs a hosiery machinist and Thomas Arthur 13 yrs an errand boy. Thomas Arthur married his wife Florence Allen at the parish church in Carlton Le Willows, Nottingham on 14th June 1917 and they lived at 130, Beck Terrace, Foxhill Lane, Carlton, Nottingham.
Private Thomas Rowlston, enlisted in Nottingham on 28th March 1917, he was 18 yrs and 186 days old, he was a pony driver (underground) , he was living at 130 Beck Terrace, Carlton, Nottingham his next of kin was his wife Florence of the same address. He was posted to the Reserves the following day. He was mobilised for war on 29th March 1917 and embarked for France on 3rd July 1917. He suffered during a gas attack on 29th September 1917 and was admitted to 12th casualty clearing station and then on the hospital at Calais on 20th October 1917. He rejoined his unit on 28th October 1917. He was posted to the 2/5th Battalion Sherwod Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment,on 29th January 1918. He died as a prisoner of war on 29th April 1918. He is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel.
In memoriam published 29th April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ROWLSTON. – In loving memory of Pte. Thomas Rowlston, 2/5th Sherwood Foresters, died of wounds in Germany April 29th, 1918.
