Joseph was born on 15th February 1886 and was the son of John Oakland a brick maker and Caroline Oakland (née Brown) of 6 Birch Avenue, Carlton. His father was born in 1856 at Carlton Le Willows, Nottingham and his mother in 1862 at Clay Cross Derbyshire. They were married in 1882 and had 12 children, all of whom were born at Carlton Le Willows. Joseph's siblings were Elizabeth b.1883, Mary b.1885, Nathan b.1888, Harriett b.1891, George b.1892, Edward b.1894, Francis b.1895, Florence b.1897, Herbert b.1900, Sydney b.1902 and Gordon b.1904. In 1911 they family lived at 6 Birch Avenue Carlton and are shown as, John 55 yrs a brick maker, he is living with his wife Caroline 49 yrs and their children, Joseph 25 yrs a lithro printer, Harriett 20 yrs a hosiery chevroner, George 19 yrs an apprentice lace machine fitter, Edward 17 yrs railway engine cleaner, Frances 16 yrs a hosiery chevroner, Florrie 14 yrs a lace mender, Herbert 11 yrs a scholar, Sydney 9 yrs a scholar and Gordon 7 yrs a scholar.
Private Joseph Oakland enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. Joseph died of wounds on 12th November 1917 and is buried in Solferino Farm Cemetery, Ypres, Grave Reference II A 28.
His younger brother Herbert Oakland also served in the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and died of wounds on 18th September 1918. He is buried in Montay- Neuvilly Road, Cemetry Montay, France. His younger brother Edward, born 24th January 1894, served during the Great War in the Royal Navy. He joined the Royal Navy on a 12 year continuous service engagement on 27th April 1912 when he was 18 years old. Edward was discharged on 5th May 1924 having completed his engagement.
