William Marriott was born in 1884 at Carlton and was the son of John and Elizabeth Marriott William married his wife Alice Morris on the 11th January 1908 at the Basford Registry Office. Then went on to have the following children, John William born 30th April 1908 Carton, Jane Elizabeth born 24th June 1909 Basford , Charles born 3rd January 1911 Carlton, Arthur born 31st October 1912 Basford and Frederick born 7th June 1914 at Basford. The family lived at 6 Southcliffe Road, Carlton. In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Southcliffe Road, Carlton and are shown as William 28 yrs a builders labourer, he is living with his wife Alice 24 yrs and their children, William 3 yrs, Jane 2yrs and Charles 1 year of age. Following his death his widow Alice was awarded a pension of 24 shillings and sixpence a week for herself and her five children which commenced on 19th February 1917.
Private William Marriott enlisted at Carlton, on 12th April 1904, he was 21 yrs and 1 month old. He served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters and served with them for a period in Singapore he was posted to the reserves on 11th April 1907. He was mobilised for war on 5th August 1914 at Derby re joining the Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 7th October 1914 and was wounded on 9th August 1915 a gun shot wound to his right shoulder and face and was admitted to the 20th general hospital at Etaples. He returned to duty later that month and by 26th September 1915 was at the base depot at Rouen. On 7th August 1916 his body was found in a canal at Etaples, he had drowned. A court of enquiry was formed the following day 8th August presided over by Captain L. W Hancock 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters to examine the circumstances of his death. At the conclusion of which it was established that he had drown accidentally but nothing further was found regarding the circumstances. He is buried at Calais Southern Cemetery
