Herbert was born in 1895 in Carlton, and was the son of John Fletcher and Mary Ann Fletcher. Herbert's father predeceased him. In the 1911 census the family was living at 1 Main Street, Carlton, with Phillip Godfrey 45 yrs, head of household, who was married and a wagon repairer. Mary Ann Fletcher, 41 yrs widow, was his housekeeper. Also in the household were her children Herbert 15 yrs a furniture packer and Edith Godfrey Fletcher 3 yrs. Herbert made a Wil; probate Nottingham 11th March 1919: Herbert Fletcher, 1 Main Street, Carlton, private in HM Army died 25th July 1918 in France. Effects £84 1 shilling and 4 pence. 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment Private Herbert Fletcher enlisted at Carlton. He died of wounds on 25th July 1918 in the 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, and was buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France (grave ref I.F.31). CWGC Terlincthun British Cemetery (extract): 'The first rest camps for Commonwealth forces were established near Terlincthun in August 1914 and during the whole of the First World War, Boulogne and Wimereux housed numerous hospitals and other medical establishments. The cemetery at Terlincthun was begun in June 1918 when the space available for service burials in the civil cemeteries of Boulogne and Wimereux was exhausted. It was used chiefly for burials from the base hospitals ... In July 1920, the cemetery contained more than 3,300 burials, but for many years Terlincthun remained an 'open' cemetery and graves continued to be brought into it from isolated sites and other burials grounds throughout France where maintenance could not be assured.'
