Born in 1881, he was the son of Benjamin and Jane Dyer. His father was a bricklayer and builder. The family consisted of 5 daughters and 2 sons. In 1891 they were living at Fox Hill Rd Carlton. By 1901 his father was a master builder who employed other tradesmen. They were then living off Main Street West, Carlton. Benjamin married Nellie Garibaldi in 1908 and they had two children, Benjamin and Doris. In 1911 they were living at 1 Cromwell Street Carlton.
Benjamin Dyer went to France on 31 December 1915. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, he was eligible for the 1915 Star, British and Victory medals
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 27 November 1917: 'Dyer. Killed in action November 8th 1917, Private Benjamin J Dyer, Sherwood Foresters, age 37. Sister Esther, brother Reuben.'
