Charles Barker

Charles was the son of Charles and Sarah Elizabeth Barker (née Morris). His father Charles was born in Gedling in about 1875 and his mother Sarah Elizabeth in Carlton on 25 April 1870, the daughter of John and Ruth Morris. Charles and Sarah were married at Carlton-le-Willows St Paul on 13 February 1892 and had six children who were born in Carlton: Flora b. 25 July 1892, Lily b 24 April 1894, Charles b. 1896, Samuel Arthur (Arthur) b. 24 January 1898 bap. Carlton St Paul 20 March 1898, Harold b. 27 June 1900 and Albert birth registered 25 January 1904. At the time of Arthur's baptism in 1898 the family was living on Chapel Street, Carlton, but had moved to 24 Park Road by 1901. In the household on the night of the census were Charles (34), a railway platelayer, Sarah (30), Florrie (8), Lily (6), Charles (5), Arthur (3) and Harold (under one year). Also in the household was Sarah's brother, Samuel Morris (33) a foreman drainer. The youngest child, Herbert, was born three years later. They were still living at 24 Park Road, Carlton, in 1911. Charles and his eldest son were both colliery workers, Charles snr. was a fitters' labourer and Charles jnr. a labourer/screener. Flora was a jinner in a lace warehouse, Lily a cleaner at a cotton mill and Arthur, Harold and Albert (7) were still at school. Charles' widowed mother, Sarah, was still living at 24 Park Road in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled. Also in the household were her unmarried daughter Lily, who was a cleaner, and her son Samuel Arthur, a colliery lamp man, and his wife Ada Eleanor (née Liversedge, b. 27 September 1904) whom he had married in 1935. Sarah Elizabeth probably died in 1944, Samuel in 1971 and Lily in 1973. Of Charles' other siblings: Flora married Clarence Jones in 1915. In 1939 she and Clarence (b. 16 May 1892), a colliery lamp man, and their daughter Audrey (b. 6 July 1929) were living in Carlton. Flora died in 1975. Harold married Annie E Smith in 1927. In 1939 Harold, a railway engine fireman and Annie (b. 6 December 1904) were living in Carlton. He died on 23 August 1984. Albert married Margaret E Cook in 1930. In 1939 Albert, a railway locomotive fireman, and Margaret (b. 5 July 1907) were living in Carlton. Albert died on 22 December 1996.
