Family History

Gordon Smedley was born in 1898 in Nottingham and was the son of Edward Jacob a city lamp lighter and Emma Elizabeth Smedley née Foster of 301, Alfred Street Central, Nottingham. His father Edward Jacob was born in 1862 in Nottingham and his mother Emma Elizabeth Foster was born in 1864 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1884 in Nottingham and went on to have 5 children sadly 1 was to die in infancy their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were Horace b1894, Gordon b1898, Eva b1891 and Grace b1889. In the 1911 census the family are living at 301 Alfred Street Central, Nottingham and are shown as Edward Jacob 49 yrs a lamp lighter, he is living with his wife Emma Elizabeth 47 yrs and their children Horace a grocers shop assistant, Gordon 13 yrs a scholar, Eva 20 yrs a lace hand and Grace 22 yrs a lace hand.

Military History

Private Gordon Smedley, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, he died of wounds on 30th April 1918. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen.

Death notice published 7th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SMEDLEY. – Died of wounds, April 30th, 1918, Pte. G. Smedley, East Lancashire Regt., aged 20, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Smedley, 301, Alfred-street Central. Dearest son, you have left us, and they loss we deeply mourn, but the God that has bereft us, He will all our sorrows heal; but again we hope to meet you, when the days of life are fled, and in heaven with joy to greet you, where no farewell tears are shed. – From sorrowing mother, father, sisters Grace, Eva, Minnie, brothers Horace (in hospital), Harry (in France), and Aunt Ada.” Above notice is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918
