Family History

James William Huckell was born in 1894 in Colne, Huntingdon and was the son of Albert James a farm labourer and Mary Huckell née Seymour of Colne Huntingdonshire. His father Alfred James was born in 1864 in Willingham, Cambridgeshire and his mother Mary Seymour was born in 1858 in Colne, they were married in 1884, their marriage was registered in the St Ives Registration District, they had the following children Sarah Ann b1885, Florence May b1890, James William b1894 and Lillian b1898 , all were born in Colne. In the 1911 census the family are living in Colne, Huntingdon and are shown as Alfred James Huckell 47 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Mary 53 yrs and their children James William 17 yrs a farm labourer and Lilian 13 yrs a fruit picker. It would appear that James got himself a job on the Midland Railways as a sidings guard and he moved up to Nottingham, he was living at 35 Thames Street, Bulwell, Nottingham when he enlisted in 1917.

Military History

Private James William Huckell enlisted on 10th April 1917 he gave his age as 22 yrs and 7 months and his address as 35 Thames Street, Bulwell, Nottingham, his next of kin was his father Alfred James of Colne, Huntingdonshire, his occupation was that of a sidings porter with the Midland Railways. He served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment landing in France on 19th July 1917. On 12th September 1917 he was admitted to hospital with foot problems and eventually admitted to hospital at Rouen. On 26th September 1917 he was returned to England via the ship 'AT Panama for treatment. He recovered and returned to France on 19th March 1918 and was serving with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters when he was killed in action on 19th September 1918. His name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial
