Harold Edward Attewell was born in 1898 at Scalford and was the son of John an engine driver and Sarah Attewell née Mathews of Scalford villlage. His father John was born in 1854 at Scalford, his mother Sarah Mathews was born in 1853 at Frisby on the Wreake, Leicestershire, they were married in 1874 their marriage was recorded in Melton Mowbray registration district, they went on have the following children, Thomas b1875, Elizabeth b1876, Annie b1879, John William b1881, Henry b1884, George b1886, Mary Jane b1888, Ernest b1890, William b1892, Charles Mathews b1895, Emily b1896 and Harold Edward b1898 all were born at Scalford. In the 1911 census the family are living at Sandy Lane, Scalford village and are shown as John Attewell 57 yrs an engine driver, he is living with his wife Sarah 58 yrs and their children, William 19 yrs a farm labourer and Harold Edward 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Harold Attewell enlisted at Leicester, he initially served with the service number 58050 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He died of wounds on 30th October 1918 whilst serving with the 20th battalion, Manchester Regiment and is buried at Cross Roads Cemetery, Fontaine-Au-Bois, France.
His brother Charles Mathews Attewell enlisted at Melton Mowbray and served with the service number 16302 in the 8th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He died on 12th November 1918 and is buried at Tournai Cemetery Communal Extension, Belgium.
