Son of Emily and the late Andrew John Payne, of Station House, Upper Broughton, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire (CWGC). His father, Andrew John, died 30 August 1919 aged 56 years and his mother, Emily, on 23 February 1939 aged 72 years. A brother, Reginald, died on 27 October 1923 aged 29 years.

He died of wounds and is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery (grave ref VIII. D. 3A)

Personal inscription on CWGC headstone: 'In the midst of life we are in death'. Inscription on family headstone in Upper Broughton (St Luke) churchyard: 'In loving memory of Andrew John Payne, the beloved husband of Emily Payne, who died Augt. 30th 1919 aged 56 years. Also of Sydney Tuft, beloved son of the above who died of wounds in France March 12th 1918, aged 25 years. In the midst of life, we are in death. Also of Reginald the beloved son of the above who died Octr. 27th 1923 aged 29 years. Thy will be done. Also of the above Emily Payne who died Feby. 23rd 1939 aged 72 years. Rest in the Lord.'
