Family History

His family came from Nottingham and his father was a serving solder in Ireland. Although born in Ireland, Charles grew up in Nottingham as one of six children. The family are on census returns for Nottingham for 1891, 1901. Charles married Alice, my grandmother, in Bedford, and fathered four sons. The family finally settled in Burton on Trent and Alice lived to 102 years and died in 1984 in Burton.

Military History

Killed by shell along with his commanding officer at Ypres, Shrewsbury Forest section of trenches at about 8 pm, 13th September, 1917. He had a brother John who also served in the Sherwood Foresters in India etc, He was a sergeant and held the military cross for gallentry
