George was born in Orston in 1896 and was the son of John a bricklayer and Alice Mills, of Orston, Notts. John was born in 1858 in Orston , Alice his wife had been born in 1859 in Winchester Hampshire, they were married in 1890 and had a further son John who had been born in Orston in 1895. The family lived all their lives in Orston, living on Chapel Street, John had been a bricklayer throughout. by the 1911 census , when George is 16 years of age he is working on a farm. in the 1911 census the family are shown as John a bricklayer living with his wife Alice and their two sons John and George at Chapel Street, Orston.

Military History

George enlisted in Nottingham , he gave his place of birth and residence as Orston. He served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters and became a Lance Corporal. He was killed in action on 26th March 1918, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme.
