Thomas Charles Burley was born in 1897 at Normanton on Soar and was the son of Thomas Edward a roadman and Lucy Burley née Charles of Normanton on Soar, Nottinghamshire. His father Thomas Edward was born in 1853 at Stagsden, Bedfordshire and his mother Lucy Charles was born in 1857 at Normanton on Soar, they were married in 1883 at Derby and had 7 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Margaret b1876 Derby, Samuel b1890 Derby and Thomas Charles b1897 Normanton on Soar. In the 1911 census the family are living at Normanton on Soar and are shown as Thomas Edward Burley 58 yrs a roadman, he is living with his wife Lucy 54 yrs and their son Thomas Charles 14 yrs a farm boy
Private Thomas Charles Burley enlisted at Loughborough and served with 1/5th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd September 1918 and is buried in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension grave reference II.J.1
His brother Sergeant Samuel Ernest Burley enlisted in Australia on 12th March 1915, giving his age as 25 yrs and 1 month, he stated his occupation was that of a miner and his next of kin was his father Thomas Edward Burley of 18 Park Avenue, Long Eaton. He served with the 20th battalion Australian Infantry. He embarked from Sydney on 26th June 1915 on HMAT 'Berrima' to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. Landing in Gallipoli he suffered from dysentery and was transferred to Lemos where following treatment he returned to Gallipoli on 11th November 1915. He left Gallipoli and disembarked at Murdros on 9th January 1916. He left Mudros on 18th March 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 25th March 1916. He was promoted to Sergeant cook on 9th August 1916 and was killed in action on 9th October 1917 at Zonnebeke where he was buried. He grave was lost and his name is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Panel7-17-23-25-27-29-31,
