Arthur Smith was born in 1883 at Screveton and the son of William a grocer and shop keeper and Harriett Smith of White House Car Colston Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1853 at Cheadle, his mother Harriett was born in 1851 at South Normanton, he was the brother of John E (b. 1876 Mansfield), Francis W (b.1887 Screveton, and Harold (b. 1890 Screveton). In 1901 they lived at 46 Radcliffe Street Bridgford and in 1911 at Car Colston. In the 1911 census the family were living at Car Colston vilage and were shown as Harriett Smith 60 yrs a widow living on private means, she is living with her sons Arthur 27 yrs a grocery carter and Harold 22 yrs a domestic groom

Military History

Corporal Arthur Smith, enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 23rd Division Horse Transport Army Service Corps, he died in the 39th Casualty Clearing Station in Italy on 13th October 1918 of broncho pneumonia. He is buried in Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension, Italy. Grave Reference: 6 D 1.
