Family History

Fred Benn was born in Retford, Nottinghamshire in 1897. He was the fourth child of Arthur and Florence Minnie Ben, nee Snowden. They had married in Caistor, Lincs, in 1892 and spent their first 13 or 14 years of marriage living at 35 Hind Street, Ordsall, Retford, where Arthur worked as a goods guard on the railway. The family of 6 children, moved to Worksop between 1905 and 1909, no doubt, for Arthur to take up his job as foreman shunter at the Worksop depot. They took residence at 23 Long Baulk Lane, and by 1913 had added another 3 children all registered in Worksop. In 1911, Fred was still at school but also working as a grocers errand boy.
