Henry Spencer married Ann Williamson in Retford in 1879 and set up home at Alma Place Lincoln. They had their first child there, Harry, in 1881 and four years later, had moved to Retford where they lived at Chapelgate and Henry working as a coal merchant. In Retford, they had four more children, Joseph 1885, Alfred 1887, Annie 1892, Hilda 1896. With the family complete, they first moved to Union Street and in 1911 were resident in 9 Chancery Lane,Retford. The two eldest by now had left the family home leaving Annie, Hilda and Alfred. Alfred also had his wife of three years, Amy Bell living with them as well as a daughter, Ida Mary born in 1910. At the time of his death he left a widow and three children. Amy, who was widowed by the war, remarried in 1918 to Cuthbert Armstrong
Alfred enlisted at Worksop in March 1915 and went to France in June 1916 he fought on the Western Front where he was killed in action on 15th July 1916. . He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France. Lance Corporal Alfred Spencer Retford Times 23rd March 1917 BELIEVED KILLED Last August we reported that Lance Corp Alfred Spencer, Retford, Sherwood Foresters was officially reported missing from July 15th 1916. He had only been six weeks in France and joined the colours two years ago this month. He was in then employed on the Great Central Railway at Worksop. His wife who lives at 15 George Street, Retford received information a week ago from the Minister of Pensions stating that the separation allowance would cease, and that a pension had been awarded her, but that the change of payment must not be taken as indicating that there was any of the death of her husband. The greatest sympathy is felt for the wife and three children, and with Lance Corporal Spencer's parents, Mr and Mrs Harry Spencer , Albert Road, Retford.
