Family History

John Orr was born in Limerick, Ireland in 1840 but by 1841 was living in Rotherham Union workhouse. In 1851 he was living as the son of William and Sarah Globe near Rotherham until he married Elizabeth Walker in 1869. They started married life living at 22 Rock Lane, Brightside Bierlow where John was working as a stock taker which trade he carried on for most of his life. The couple lived mainly around the Sheffield area with the exception for a few years around 1891, when John was carrying out his stock takers job in Cumberland. Between the years of 1870 and 1892, they produced a family of 14 children, eight boys and six girls. (Three had died by 1911). In 1901, John Orr had changed from being a stock taker to being the time keeper in a steel works and were resident at Nether Hallam, Sheffield. One of his children was Albert Ernest Orr born 4 June 1882 in Kimberworth, Rotherham and was working as a furnace man in a local steel works. By 1911, Albert had left the family home and was a boarder at 9 Balby Place, Sheffield, working as a general labourer in an engineering works. His parents, now age 62 and 70, were living in the house with one of their sons as head, and with no occupation were probably supported by him. Albert, at some time after war was declared, joined the forces and his parents must have moved to Retford as John Orr died there in 1916, aged 76 and Elizabeth was recorded as dying at Retford at the ripe old age of 97 in 1945
