Frank Morley

Frank attested for a period of six years into the Special Reserve on 15th May 1911 and had a medical on the following day at Derby. He stated on his attestation papers that he had previously served with the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry that he was 17 years and 7 months of age and was a labourer. He served with the 4th bn Sherwood Foresters and later transferred to the 2nd battalion. He was mobilised at the start of the war and served on the home front until 27th December 1914 when he went out to France, where he remained with the British Expeditionary Force until 21st August 1915. He served again at the home front until 10th February 1916 when he again went to France. He was killed in action on 16th September 1916 and has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial. Pte F Morley Retford Times 27 Oct 1916 The above is a portrait of Pte F Morely, Sherwood Foresters, only son of Mr and Mrs T Morley, 34 Poplar Street, Retford who fell on the field of battle between the 13th and 16th September. Deceased was a special reservist and was called up on the outbreak of hostilities. He went to France in December 1914 and was wounded at Hooge on Aug 9th the following year. He went out again in January this year. The gallant soldier who was 23 years of age was formerly employed as a fireman on the Great Central Railway and was well liked and esteemed by his fellow work men. He was the only grandson of Mr Wm Whitlam of Ranskill. His father, Mr Tom Morley is an old soldier having served eight years in India in the 17th Lancers. He did garrison duty during the South African War. A son in law of Mr Morley, Driver W Joynes is in the RFA and has been wounded. He is now stationed in Kent.
