Family History

Charles was born in 1877 at Retford and was the son of Alfred Edward Spencer a general labourer and Ann Millington. In the 1901 census the family are living at Moorgate Retford, Charles is 24 years of age and a general labourer also at the address are his brothers John and Alfred and sister Edith. In 1901 he marries his wife Edith Harrison at Retford , they go on to have four children:- Annie born 1902 , Evelyn born 1907 and Charles 1910 and Muriel born 1916. By the 1911 census Charles is living with his family at Lets yard, Moorgate, Retford he is 34 years of age and a foundry labourer at the local iron works.

Military History

Charles enlisted in Retford and served with the 18th battalion The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) He was killed in action on 3rd may 1917 and has no known grave,his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial
