Alfred was born in Retford in 1897 and was the oldest son of Alfred a gas stocker at the local gasworks and Annie Howlett , of 6 Wellington Street, Retford he had three brothers, Henry, George and Francis and three sisters Edith, may and Annie. In the 1911 census the family are all living at 17 Spital Hill, Retford , Alfred is by now 14 years of age and still at school.
Alfred enlisted in Derby and served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys ) Regiment. He was killed in action on 5th October 1918 and he is buried in Guizancourt Farm Cemetery, Gouy, Aisne, France grave reference C 10. Pte Alfred Howlett Retford Times 28 Feb 1919 Mr and Mrs Alfred Howlett, 6 Wellington Street, Retford, have received intimation from the War Office that their eldest son, Pte Alfred Howlett, Notts and Derbys, was killed on October 5th 1818, or some time later. He joined up in 1915 and was a stoker at the Retford Corporation Gas Works. He was first in the Sherwood Rangers and was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters. He was in his 21st year and was an old scholar of the Retford Wesleyan Day School. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Howlett and family in their great loss.
