George was born in Retford in 1894 and was the son the late William James Herbert a canal agent and his wife Ellen E Duddridge, of Retford. In the 1901 census the family are living at Canal bank, Retford George is 6 years of age and livng with him are his siblings, Margaret, William and James. by the 1911 census George is now 16 years of age and is an under gardener and is living with his elder brother William and elder sister Margaret at 28 Whitehall Road, Retford. Prior to his enlistment he was employed as a second gardener at Bleithfield Hall, Rugeley.
He enlisted in Retford and served with the 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys regiment ) he was killed in action on the western front on 26th September 1917 , his body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot, memorial.
Private G H Duddridge Retford Times 23rd November 1917 Wounded and missing Mr W T Duddridge, head gardener at the Fairy Grove Nurseries, Retford has been officially informed that his brother Pte G H Duddridge, Sherwood Foresters, is reported wounded and missing since September 26th 1917. it is ten weeks since any of his relations or friends heard from him. he joined the colours in November 1915 and previous to that was employed as second gardener at Bleithfield Hall, Rugeley
