Frederick was born in 1898 in Hitchen and was the son of Alfred George and Sarah Ann Davies, of Meech House, Ollerton Rd., Retford, Both his parents were born in Burton on Trent Staffordshire and had moved around the country from London to Yorkshire and eventually to Hitchin in Hertfordshire according to the place of birth of their eight children. However by the 1911 census we find the family living at 36 Victoria Road, Retford, Frederick is 12 years of age and still at school while his father Alfred is a ticket collector with the Great Northern Railway.
Frederick enlisted in Retford and served with the 1st battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He served in Salonika before going to the Western Front . On the 9th November 1918 he was severely wounded in the legs and his right leg had to be amputated , however died in Rouen Hospital from his wounds on 15th November 1918 . He is buried in St Sever Cemetery extension, Rouen, France grave reference S III V 22.
Pte F W Davies Retford Times 6th December 1918. Died in France Mr and Mrs A.G. Davies, Meech House, Ollerton Road, Retford have received the sad tidings that their son Pte F W Davies (20) K.O.Y.L.I. has died at Rouen Hospital on November 15th from wounds received in both legs on the 9th following an operation for the amputation of the right leg. He had served in Salonika and in France. The other son Pte Alf H Davies A.S.C. is still serving, and before the war was assisted by his brother at the Victoria Toilet saloon. Mr and Mrs Davies have lost a son-in-law Pte E, A. Howgate, Lincolns and another son-in-law Pte C Thompson A.S.C is serving in German East Africa. Mr and Mrs Davies and family and the deceased's fiancée Miss A Elsom, attended a memorial service at All Hallows Church, Ordsall, on Sunday morning week. The deceased soldier had been a member of the choir, and the preacher, the Rev H Dobson, made suitable reference to him and expressed sympathy with the bereaved family.
