Family History

George was born in 1897 in Retford and was the son of George William , a railway guard and Hannah Renham Cooper of 34 Darrell Road, Retford, they had four children a son George William and three daughters, Ellenor, Mary and Harriett. In the 1911 census the family are living at 34 Darrell Road, George is 14 years of age and an iron moulder in the local foundary.

Military History

George enlisted at Retford and served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment.) his medal cards state he first saw a theatre of war in France on 16th march 1915, he was killed in action on 15th September 1916 and is buried at Guillemont Road, Cemetery , Somme, France
