Percy was born in East Ardsley, Yorkshire in 1899 and was the son of George a railway goods guard and Elizabeth Clements, (nee Bygrave) of Retford, he was the youngest of three sons , his elder brothers were Edward born 1897 and Sydney born 1898. In the 1901 census when Percy was 2years of age the family lived at Oxford Street, East Ardley however by the 1911 census the family had moved into Retford and were living at 7 Century Road, Percy is by now 12 years of age and a scholar.
Percy's army service record survives, it states he enlisted on 12th September 1916 at Retford giving his age as 17 years and 8 months and that his occupation was that of a clerk. |His address was given as 7 Century Road, Retford and his next of kin was his father George of the same address. On 13th September he was posted to the army reserve. He was mobilised on 21st February 1917 and after training he was embarked from Folkstone on 19th January 1918 and landed in Boulogne the same day and joined the British Expeditionary force in France . On 20th January he was at the military base in Etaples where he was posted into the field with the 9th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. On 16th march 1918 he was brought into the 18th casualty clearing station with multiple gun shot wounds from which he subsequently died. He is buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, Pas-De-Calais, France
