Family History

Alfred James Upton was born in 1897 and was baptised on 4th August 1897 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Radcliffe on Trent, he was the son of James a nurseryman and his first wife Amy Maude Upton née Eve of Harlequin Nursery, Radcliffe on Trent, formerly of Manvers Arms, Radcliffe.. James was born in 1872 at Radcliffe, Amy Maude Eve was born in 1870 at Radford, she died in 1897 at Nottingham aged 27 yrs. James went on to re marry Mary Ann Clarke, born 1871 at Cotgrave, they were married in 1899 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they had a further son John born in 1904. In 1911 the family are living at Harlequin Nurseries, Radcliffe on Trent, James is 39 yrs and a nursey man, he is living with his second wife Mary Ann 40 yrs and their two sons Alfred James 14 yrs and John 7 years old.

Military History

Rfn. Alfred James Upton, 1/7th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, was badly wounded, a penetrating chest wound, on 11th October 1918 and died of those wounds two days later on 13th October. He is buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux. 26.9. 16 Posted to France. 14.1.17 Diarrhoea 17.2. 17 Scabies. Leave 2.1. 18 to 16.1.18. 17.2. 18 Transferred to West Yorkshire Regiment. 4.9.1918 Gastroenteritis, re-joined Battalion 30.9.1918. 11.10.1918 Chest wounds. Died of wounds, 13.10.1918 He is buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, III F6

Death notice published 24th October 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “UPTON. – Died of wounds on October 13th, Pte. Alfred James Upton, L.G. Section, West Yorks., aged 21, the dearly loved son of Mr. and Mrs. James Upton, of Harlequin Nurseries and Manvers Arms, Radcliffe-on-Trent, and grandson of the late Alfred D.
