Herbert Tomlinson was the son of Matthew George Tomlinson and Emma Still who married in the Radford registration district in 1876. Their children included: Harriet (b.1876), George (b.1878/d.1881), Albert (b.1882), George Henry (b.1884), Ernest (b.1886), Emma (b.1888), Herbert (b.1890), Beatrice (b.1893), Arnold (b.1895) and Walter (b.1897). The Tomlinson family lived at 48 Prospect Street, Radford [C.1881]; 33 Forster Street, Radford [C.1891]; 11 Osborne Street, Radford [C.1901 & C.1911]; 332 Alfreton Road, Nottingham [CWGC]. Matthew George Tomlinson who worked as a mechanic/fitter, died at Nottingham in 1928, aged 72. His wife, Emma, predeceased him, dying at Nottingham in 1916, aged 58.
He enlisted at Nottingham; initially served with the Royal Army Service Corps [Service No.M/303154]; died from his wounds; the location of his grave was lost so his name was added to the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
His younger brother, Private Arnold Tomlinson of the 20th Bn, Northumberland Fusiliers died 6 November 1916
