Leonard Thomas Swindell was the son of George Swindell and Mary Astill who married at Nottingham in 1879. Their children included: Robert (b.1880), Sarah Elizabeth (b.1882), George (b.1886), Leonard Thomas (b.1891), Bernard (b.1893), Harold (b.1896), William Henry (b.1899) and Wilfred Astill (b.1902). The Swindell family lived at: 6 Radcliffe Terrace, Nottingham [C.1881]; 47 Citadel Street, Radford [C.1891]; 10 Beresford Street, Old Radford [C.1901 & CWGC of brother, Bernard]. George Swindell, who worked as a carter, died at Nottingham, aged 62, in 1915. His wife, Mary, appears to have died in the Basford registration district, aged 72, in 1930. On 11 October 1913 Leonard Thomas Swindell married Minnie Taylor at Radford St Peter’s Church. They had two children: Bernard (b.1914) and Thomas (b.1915). In 1925 Minnie Swindell married George Green. Minnie Green probably died at Nottingham, aged 62, in 1950.
He enlisted in Nottingham; died from his wounds; buried at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
His brother Sergeant Bernard Swindell of 9th Bn. Sherwood Foresters died 27 April 1917 while a second brother, Private William Henry Swindell of the 5th Bn. [Alexandra, Prince of Wales Own] Yorkshire Hussars died 27 May 1918.
