Herbert Smalley

Herbert Smalley was the son of Herbert Smalley and Sarah Ann Johnson who married at Nottingham in 1895. In 1901 the Smalley family were living at 3 Leen Place, St Peter’s Street, Radford [C.1901]. At that time the Smalleys had three children: Herbert (b.1898) and Hilda (b.1900). There was an older child, Esther Johnson (b.1893) born before the Smalleys had married. With the exception of Esther and Hilda Smalley who were both boarding with the Swift family at 1 Leen Place, St Peter’s Street, Radford in 1911, the rest of the Smalley family are missing from the 1911 census so it becomes difficult to identify additional children born between 1901 and 1911. However there are four children with the surname Smalley, where the mother’s maiden name was Johnson, whose births were register in Nottingham after 1911. These were: Gladys (b.1912), Edith (b.1913), Ethel May (b.1915) and Arthur (b.1917). The post-war address for Herbert and Sarah Ann Smalley, given in the CWGC, was 45 Kennington Road, Old Radford. Herbert Smalley senior, who worked as a threader for lace machines [C.1901], probably died at Nottingham, aged 50, in 1921. His widow, Sarah Ann, died at Nottingham, aged 74, in 1948
