Thomas Hambleton was the son of Thomas Hambleton and Mary Jane Mousley who married in the Basford registration district in 1879. Their five children were: William [Hamlinton] (b.1879), Joseph Edward [Hamleton] (b.1881), Phoebe Elizabeth (b.1885), Thomas [Hamlinton] (b.1888) and Mary (b.1891). They lived at: Ilkeston Road, Marpool, Heanor [C.1881]; Bircumshaw Row, Heanor [C.1891]; 3 Bircumshaw Road, Heanor [C.1901 & C.1911]. Thomas Hambleton, who was a colliery worker, died in the Basford registration district, aged 68, in 1924. Mary Jane Hambleton died in the Belper area, aged 87, in 1949. On 18 February 1911 Thomas Hambleton married Gertrude Mathers at Radford St Peter’s Church. Newly married they were staying with William Henry & Emily Davies who lived at Heanor at the time of the 1911 census. They appear to have had one daughter: Mary Jane (b.1914). The CWGC gives his widow’s address as 3 Percy Terrace, Birkin Avenue, Hyson Green. Gertrude Hambleton did not marry and died in the Nottingham area, aged 76, in 1966.
Enlisted at Nottingham on 18 May 1915; embarked for France 6 March 1916; died from his wounds yet his body was subsequently not recovered; so his name was added to the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
